EA didn't even try with this one as they haven't for the past decade. Sure you got new franchise mode features but viewing box scores should've been in the game ages ago. Features from NHL 14 such as connected franchise & winter classic are still missing, Be a Pro is still the same for what now? 4 seasons? The focus on online modes & their micro transactions ruined this franchise as it does with every franchise these days. Save your money & download user made rosters for 24 or 23.

I played the Beta and the gameplay changes were noticeable which motivated me to buy the game. For New Players that have never played an NHL game: NHL is a decent franchise, basically the only option for an NHL based hockey game. Is it a good game? Of course it is, you an pick it up and play it easily. Now what I do not recommend is buying it every year. I recommend purchasing the game once every three to four years as 1. You can download rosters that users make 2. Due to EA's lack of new content in yearly releases, you might not see a noticeable difference Now speaking from a POV of playing since NHL 10: I played the BETA and they convinced me to buy it. I will be real with you, it's refreshing to have a little bit of change to the actual gameplay. I feel more in control of my player and the hits are timed instead of random. The fatigue system provides more changes in the way you score instead of finding the repetitive tactic / glitch goal [there are still glitch goals]. The goalies getting tired and the pressure system aids in creating more variety in terms of goals and that's what has been missing in NHL for a while now. The new real life music adds to the atmosphere and I like feeling as in I'm actually in a rink instead of always hearing the music they pulled out of nowhere. Edit: michigan should not be this easy holy moly The new celebrations are cool but why isn't it special for moments like first goal, 100 goals etc... It's weird. I want to also be able to disable virtual boards because I dislike the arcadic feel to it when it shows stats while the game is playing. Now for new or updated offline game modes ... Where's the content? I'm extremely angry that nothing has changed and all I get is improved gameplay. What's so fun about improved ways of scoring goals when you cant also enjoy new features to do exactly that in? Absolutely no new content!! TLDR: If you're a yearly buyer, please buy it on sale, I recommend somewhat you buy it for a decently refreshing gameplay If you've never played NHL before, good game go ahead and pick it up. Edit 2024-05-25: Moved down to a one star. I have played less than 40 hrs of this game, purchase NHL 2K7 on ebay to get good gameplay

If you don't focus online, and just single player like me, download rosters on NHL 22. This game is not 90$ and the current price 40$ isn't worth it either. Max 15. This is exactly the same game. We love to joke about it but EA actually did it. The visuals are better but nothing about the gameplay is changed. Franchise mode has been tweaked but really is that something to go nuts about? The new moves introduced barely appear. HUT: If you are on 22 then I do not care if you purchase 23 for HUT. Not my thing NHL 23 or NHL in general is not a bad game, but a annual release needs a lot of content to be considered money well spent. If you're a buyer reading this, make EA pay for their mistakes by not making them money. WE ARE BEING MOCKED. If you're a first time NHL player, buy 22 that way you get a cheaper deal while not missing huge features.
