Listen, this movie is definitely not for everyone, it’s also not something you should see on a whim if you aren’t into musicals. Most Webber musicals are sung through, so if you need dialogue to follow a story, don’t go.
This film didn’t at all deserve the reviews it got, but it was such a controversial musical before it was a film, Hooper kind of asked for it. However, a lot of the people going to see this movie have no idea about the stage musical or it’s history. It’s supposed to be a little creepy, it’s supposed to have a really lose plot line that’s up for interpretation (hello this is theatre) and you never question the magic of Webber’s compositions by asking what jellicle means!
The cast is probably the most frustrating part. No one would go see this without the big names attached to it, but it could have done so much better with different and probably lesser known people. Jason Derulo is just all wrong, Taylor swifts performance was probably the worst, I was impressed and very happy with the lead Victoria. Elba was also a strange choice and so was his costume change at the end, that was just uncomfy. Jens performance was gorgeous and she’ll win well deserved awards, but it did feel a little sobby. I mean it’s sad but... like she seems like she’s the overly emotional kind of drunk. Snot and tears were streaming literally every second she was on the screen.
Personally I don’t think musicals should ever have movie adaptations, but this was a challenge that was overall done well.
