I was so excited for this show. Finally, I thought, a show that provides accurate, unfiltered Indian American representation. I have found this show to instead perpetuate preexisting Indian stereotypes. It makes me so mad to see how Mindy Kaling, being one of the few Indian American figures in American entertainment, can direct a show that attempts to gain widespread approval and popularity at the expense of mocking Indian Americans and their culture. As an Indian American teenage female with plenty of Indian American teenage friends, I can confidently say that Devi's character does nothing to further our representation in the media. Indian American teenagers are incredibly diverse, and having this one image representing us in the media continuously is incredibly disappointing. I really hoped for better.
