It feels like viewers have been reading too much into this simple yet very focused apocalyptic film.
As someone who's watched a couple of apocalyptic thrillers, I've got to say this one wasted zero time to get to the action. It was fast-paced, took a ( new enough) plotline and followed it all the way through to a good-ish ending. What added to the film was the piercing depiction of how humanity can spiral into chaos.
People- losing their minds cause of something as basic as lack of sleep, and even those most desperate not to slip into madness are helpless cause of the circumstances. It makes you wonder, honestly, how much in control we really are. Every conversation between characters kept me at the edge of my seat, because I didn't know who might just snap. And snap, a lot of them do.
I loved the film all the more because of that.
I also quite loved the characterisation in the film. Gina Rodriguez catches everyone's attention immediately as a troubled mom who's just trying to make ends meet and has been waiting for a moment of peace. She gets none. Her acting is top-notch, so much so that there are moments in which you feel like you're facing all her trials with her. Not one single emotional moment feels forced or worthy of fast-forwarding. Ariana Greenblatt and Lucius Hoyos also ace their parts. The former is worthy of a special mention. Though not always acting exactly how a traumatised kid must, her character's signature traits quite uplift the film.
I would also like to praise the cinematography. There were one or two shots that I haven't seen used much.
Honestly, I am unable to nitpick at the film. It was good, and there it is. Definitely worth a watch, if one doesn't look for extra clues where there are none.
Well actually, still worth a watch.
