The traditional notion of the detective story is that is tells two stories. Story One is about the crime; Story Two is about the investigation of Story One. True Detective Season 3 is remarkably sophisticated for a TV show in so far as it adds a Story Three - the reconstruction of the investigation from the point of view of characters whose memories may be suspect. It deals with issues as intangible as the nature of truth, and the consequences of past actions. It is a truly remarkable piece of story-telling, possibly even better than Season 1. Add in a couple of really compelling central performances and you have a show that really can keep you up till 4am. it's difficult to speak too highly of it, especially after what everyone agrees was the rather-disappointing Season 2. Even if you don't generally like crime shows, you need to watch this one.
