Absolute nonsense. The first book was well set up and provided a good platform for which this could be followed up on. However this was absolutely abominable. The whole book is erratic and never decides what’s concretely going on. Tris becomes the most obnoxious and irritating character, she is arrogant and justifies her reckless behaviour with vague excuses/explanations. She subliminally feels as though she is better than everyone which is extremely frustrating given that she is 16 years old. Tobias is also unpleasant here, through his constant dissatisfaction with Tris (Which is understandable but annoying given that we want to see the relationship through.) You just honestly want them to break up- because their relationship is too codependent and toxic. The fact that you want them to break up signifies that the author has failed in hooking the reader into this romance. The plot moves around in circles, with similar things happening again and again. The explanations for why they happen leaves much to be desired. Many of the deaths are unnecessary and just act as filler for a novel which is desperately trying to justify its “dystopian genre.” It doesn’t grab you the way other dystopian books like “hunger games, maze runner or 1984” do. The horridness of society is almost detached here given the repulsed inclination we feel towards the protagonist- who is extremely solipsistic and narcissistic. The society is not well depicted an antagonist, given that it feels incomplete and illogical- the third book does a horrible job of giving answers to our questions. Tobias is well written in the first book and the “four” mini stories, but not at all on insurgent and allegient. Also Tris and Tobias’s relationship disgusts me. TRIS IS 16 and they do all they weird intimate stuff (which is constantly described in the book) in a relationship that is breaking apart. It’s not relatable and not well written like Peeta and Katniss in the hunger games. Overall Roth dropped the ball on her sequels, and shouldn’t have used such a horrible writing structure and plot in an attempt to provide the reader with explanations- which she failed at- Don’t read it for your own mental preservation
