"Sirf Ek Thappad
Lekin maar nahi sakta"
That is all the movie is about. While we get to know this in the trailer, what makes the movie engaging is the brilliant screenplay, the writing and some breathtaking acting by everyone, particularly Tapsee Pannu. That the box office failure of movies like Thappad and Chhappak were celebrated, goes to tell volumes about the times we live in. Thappad is a modern movie, navigating the nuances of feminism in the urban landscape. Like Pataal Lok, it places its characters in three different socio-economic strata and unravels their plots therein. But the message is not without its issues. Towards the end, 3 female characters find their happiness in separation, while 3 find it in mutual respect and understanding. Perhaps, signals that the concept of marriage is an 'unfair deal' for an Indian woman to start with. It takes work, hard work to restore this balance. And in the process we all [will] make mistakes - patriarchal men, patriarchal women, even woke men. Some become irreconcilable. The movie provides those reference points. Tapsee's character answers the most cryptic of questions, sometimes asked in jest, sometimes rhetorically and sometimes in all seriousness.
"What does a woman want?"
"Respect and Happiness!"
