Went with a friend to see 1917 with both of us having great expectations due to the large amount of favorable reviews. If you want fantasy escapism entertainment this is the movie for you. I believe the movie was based on a real story, unfortunately there is little realism in 1917. Well before the baby cried on cue I realized going to this movie was a mistake and I had allowed myself to be victimized by all the hype surrounding 1917. I know the reason I bought in to believing 1917 was going to be good was all the critics writing or saying it was great from their media platforms along with winning a Golden Globe for best drama and possible Oscars. The unique film making technique used must have inspired the glowing reviews and allowed them to overlook that the events in the movie as presented were unbelievable The movie isn't terrible, it's just not real, so if you want to be entertained by an unusual way of filming to tell a story, go, just don't expect a believable story about a sequence of events occurring over 24 hours during WW1. On a scale of 1-10, I am giving 1917 a generous 7 because of the way Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins filmed it. P.S. My friend spoke first after the movie saying kept hoping it would get better and for the last twenty minutes had wanted to leave but did not convey that to me until after the movie because unsure how I was receiving movie, was assured I felt the same, also reported that during bathroom visit at theater after movie another patron joking about the 'nine lives' of Lance Corporal Schofield. No believable reality movie of a man during a day in World War I but a fantasy superhero movie told in a unique, interesting and enjoyable way, go with the latter view and, unlike two people I know, you won't be disappointed. I should have known better to trust the critics, but it usually a movie they have panned and said was no good when I have liked that movie, not a movie they have praised along with winning a Golden Globe with possible Oscars and then I don't think much of the same movie. A Golden Globe for best drama is not right, wonder if politics and money obtained it, imagine the Oscar will go to a more deserving movie. 1917 deserves one for cinematography but not drama.
