I read this book several years ago, and I'm still overwhelmed by the scope of this story. It's amazing how East and West clashed in China during the 20th. century. Hong Kong is a city where the two cultures learned to live and work together, notwithstanding the political and ideological sparring that has occurred there. Many areas of China-Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai-serve as the battlegrounds for betrayal and drama in this story. The characters in this novel bring the history and culture of China to life. It gives us an appreciation for the background of today's conflicts with China. I heartily endorse this book if you wish to learn about the history of Hong Kong, and how its influence of the world continues today.
