It's like lifting the hood up and getting to understand how the whole engine works. The evolution (most appropriate term) of how one form morphed into something else and how someone else came and innovated on someone else's creation is amazing. It's heartwarming to see how the OGs / originators always get respect and innovators got shout outs throughout. Without this film I wouldn't have understood how one thing led to another.
I wish there was a focus on James Brown who doesn't get a mention although he is probably the most sampled artist of all time and provided some respected drumbeats to the genre. There should have been some focus on the The Score "Fugees album", Will Smith (pre-slap) and the first Grammy for Rap music, Slick Rick "Children's Story", Doug E Fresh (the father of Beatboxing), Naughty by Nature, the influence of dance (eg the film Breakin and the Boogaloo Shrimp), Vanilla Ice, more emphasis on Ice-T's "Copkiller" controversy, the influence of Kid and Play (use of film as a vehicle eg House party), Salt 'n Pepa.
I know there's so much ground to have covered and have to commend the writers and producers for having really gotten to the meat and help us answer a question we don't ever really ask, which is "How did we get here ?".
Thank you for not focusing only on the extremely wealthy, we love that they've done well. The vision, grind, relentlessness and innovation demonstrated by some of the successful artists should be made into business cases for young people and innovators.
