I'm going to touch upon a certain things about this film so be sure to read through the end.
I had to let you guys know "Toofaan" is getting unfair user ratings here in India because it DARES to touch on a progressive topic a certain community is being regressive about. And they have been rating it low on THAT very basis. You can even see some of the reviewers mentioning it and some are using the words like "Sickular" or "communal baiting". Which is highly misleading as the movie doesn't propagate any such thing except for following a FICTIONAL story of a PERSONAL life.
*Coming to the movie, The film had a pretty good start to character development and where things are coming from to the boxer "Aziz Ali". This is not a movie on boxing, this is a movie based on the character Aziz Ali who discovers there is a way to channelize his passion in a way so that it doesn't hurt anyone.
The film had some strong points with intense moments here and there but all in all, it felt stretched. I had high expectations from ROM-Farhan Akhtar team up especially after Bhaag Milkha Bhaag but Toofaan felt like a movie that wanted to be good but was held back by poor writing especially in the second half where everything starts to bore you down. Even though the technical aspects of the film like, Set design, cinematography and editing are on par with some of the best movies we have today, the writing and plot makes it seem like these are 3 different movies squeezed into one. As a result you lose interest by the time it's second half and will be rooting for the movie to end... but it wont! Yes that's what it felt like by the end. This film could have been much better without the mood interrupting songs and a script much more streamlined and "tighter".
Emotionally they had something great from which we can feel inspired by when nothing goes right in life. I felt it could have been shown in a more effective and an uncluttered way.
The songs by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy were absolute dissappointments. They add nothing to the film apart from the fact that the songs make the movie longer and are torturous!
All in all, I would rate this movie a 4 or a 5 had it not been a missed opportunity. With that being said, it's not a bad one time watch. Watch it if you love ROPM or Farhan Akhtar (AS AN ACTOR) but expect nothing like one of the gems they have produced in their careers before because it's far from it.
