This is my all time favorite novel. That may sound like a stretch, but I gleaned so much from the choppy (and very traditionally South African) writing. The characters are incredibly developed and so easy to connect with. The storyline is beautifully woven with short chapters of context thrown in there to make it come alive. Many people see this book as a sad book, and yes, it can be gut-wrenching, but I have never read a book that makes me more joyful. To me, the clear message was that it is abundantly important to find Joy and Friendship amid hard times. Laughter and Joy spring up in this novel very often, and in reading it, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelming Joy in those instances. I never cry, and this book had me bawling out of Joy in front of my family. I recommend no book more highly than this one. If you have the opportunity to read it, do it now! You will not regret it.
