I want to love it. I’m a huge fan of musicals so I was poised ready to enjoy this movie when I first sat down to watch it.
The music, cast, choreography, characters, costuming, sets... literally EVERYTHING about this movie is top notch.
The only exception is that the story pursues way too many directions. Each storyline has great potential to be compelling, but the film is unable to do justice to any of them in the 1h 46m run time.
Despite all of the other elements coming together to create a sensory masterpiece, the lack of cohesion, depth and follow through in the story leaves the viewer feeling detached and a bit confused at times. So it falls completely flat for me, disappointingly.
