The story was interesting. Part of the problem is with Matt Bomer's acting. His breathy "over drama', gets old. And the "strum and drang" was overkill. If they had throttled the over-angst back a bit, it would have been more interesting.

It could have interesting, but beating the public over the head, and the repetition is too much. Dumbed down and pompous simultaneously. About 10 times too many characters.

I am not Catholic, and one does not have to be religious, to be amazed at this series. It is absolutely soulful. The beauty of the characters, and their shortcomings, mix together for incredible viewing. And Sean Bean as Father, makes me cry every episode. Have tissues close.
