First off I must admit I absolutely did not expect this series to be as good, no, as GREAT as it is. My initial thought was 'when is this guy going to stop crying'. Ive been a die-hard 49er fan for over 30yrs and huge supporter of Kap when he played for the San Francisco.Alhough I've always felt he could have used that platform in a more positive manner/direction to bring awareness of the racism that still exists in today's society, government, and educational system.
This series does a great job at showing the other side of the story. I grew up in neighboring town of Turlock, CA and just like most of the small farm towns in that area, it was predominantly white with very few Hispanics and even less blacks. I graduated high school almost 7yrs before the time set in this series and it's amazing how little progress has been made. Fast forward to present day- different generation, same racist mentality and agendas. Not only in that area but everywhere in the United States. The idea and well-worn and long-standing American racist idea: that people of color are not or cannot be American in the same way as white people and so should return to their “own country.”
Most ppl, or most white ppl today seem to believe that racism is like an on or off switch -- something that a person either has or doesn’t have. An essential essence that can come popping out to reveal a person’s true character, a previously well-hidden flaw.
For white students and most white people generally, that is something to fear: being revealed as a racist. As a result, many of us are reluctant to label a person “racist,” preferring instead to say that we cannot truly know what is in a person’s heart or mind and moving along. But if we teach white students to see racism for what it is -- an idea that can be expressed through behaviors, institutions and cultures -- we free them and ourselves to see things more accurately and with more openness to change.
I believe this docudrama exposes many truths and struggles of the racism colored children face everyday in this country . I was hooked immediately and binge watch all six episodes! The director deserves praise for the great job she did telling Kaps story. Bravo
