This movie... is so stupid but that's part of its charm. A lot of why this movie works is in Andy Samberg's performance. His ability to deliver jokes or one-liners with his special deadpan is why this movie got laughs out of me. Some of the jokes are stupid and some of the deliveries don't work. I love Patrick Warburton and Kristin Chenoweth, so their characters were unique in that I knew their voices and enjoyed listening to them speak. The idea of stepping out from underneath a legacy's shadow to make yourself your own person is a good moral, as is giving yourself better expectations in life.
The villain is boring, but the voice is funny because it's Jeff Daniels, who's hilarious. The alien world is not particularly interesting, but the colors -- when they are there -- are bright and the animation does flow nicely.
The chimpanzees are nicely animated, and some of the human work is fine. The aliens are unique enough in design to work with the animation, but most of the alien world looks either like a bare desert or like it's made of plastic.
The aliens who are subjugated either give in weirdly quickly to the ruling of the villain or act like he's been doing that for years when I think it was not much more than a couple of weeks.
Some of the jokes don't work at all, like Samberg's character calling himself an "envelope pusher" when he hurts himself in a stupid stunt. But other ones do at least get a giggle and they mostly do come from Samberg.
I don't know if it deserves the low rating it got, but it is a movie that I'm glad I saw once as a kid and then once as an adult to remind myself of what happened. I remembered quite a bit of it, but it was nice to understand the mostly adult conversations from an adult perspective.
That is one weird thing to note: a lot of the conversations are mature. Not in a lewd or swearing way, but in a science-talking and making certain jokes way. The scientist characters mostly use advanced astrophysics jargon and a lot of what the chimps say are conversations older kids and adults have, not small kids.
I don't know who this movie aims at, but I think it's worth at least one viewing. If for any reason, watch it for Samberg's character and delivery.
