There are some bright spots, including the casting of Laurence Luckinbill as sympathetic villain Sybok, but this is a mostly dreary affair. William Shatner's directorial debut is an uneven effort, employing awkward comic relief moments and drab scenery. Despite a genuinely interesting concept about the search for a higher being and other high-minded themes, the script is muddled and at times incoherent.

One of the more energetic, fun entries particularly after the mostly dreary "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier." Christopher Plummer brings zest and charm to his villain, Chang. The technical aspects are solid, including Oscar-nominated makeup and well-presented visual effects. A memorable close to the original crew movie series.
