The author describes the strength and spirit of her mother who not only survived, but managed to engage in an activity, against the rules, which underscored a commonality among the prisoners and disobeyed German rules. There is also an emphasis on how her parents rebuilt their lives, and through that, defeated Hitler and his cronies.
