In "The War of the Worlds" the aliens are defeated by germs; here they are defeated by a psychic boy. There are other characters such as a space communications expert having an illicit affair with an astronaut, a mother whose husband is cheating on her, and a soldier whose unit is wiped out. Not sure why they are in the movie. Not sure what the point of the movie is. Pretty sure I wasted my time watching it.
