First, I would like to point out that the description of this clearly states that this is an original take on the classic tale. There are so many Dickens purists out there that want to trash this film because it strays from the original storyline. This story has been told so many times...what is wrong with telling it in a different way? It's been done countless times with Lord knows how many stories. Just look at Walt Disney for goodness sake. I found this version to be far more captivating and realistic than the classic, which has always been one of my favorites (hence why I found myself watching this). It brings the characters so much more depth, and in my opinion, explains why Scrooge is the way he is much better than "he has a broken heart, and is obsessed with money". Sorry guys, but there is always going to be more to the story than that whether Mr. Dickens decides to share it with us or not. Yes, it's dark. Yes, there are things in this film that can (and should) make you feel uncomfortable. That is the point. Real pain, real suffering, real trauma is never sugar coated, nor is it comfortable. I also have no problem losing the cheesy happily ever after ending, and thoroughly enjoyed the extra time spent on Jacob Marley. As for those who think there is no forgiveness from the Crachit's, I disagree. There is the beginning of forgiveness. Just as a man cannot completely change overnight, nor can a victim of trauma forgive her assailant after 5 minutes. It takes time. I welcome this fresh take on the story, and would recommend it to anyone who is yearning for a Christmas film with more to it than your worn out holly jolly standards.
