I'm writing this because I feel its a shame that when this the only media review Google features here is one of the only negative ones. I searched for the book that I've read and value greatly to see about any foreign language editions, and was just shocked and disheartened to see that not only do I personally disagree wth the single review extract that comes up, but so does, it seems, almost every other review they could have featured. And I just looked at again on amazon and HarperCollins' web site.
Washington Post line: Neruda "remains oddly and frustratingly distant in Eisner's telling" [and more along that within the review]
Elsewhere:
"Mark Eisner's definitive biography of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda reads like a beautifully written novel: attentive to scene, momentum, and rich with evocative details.”
— Cristina García, Dreaming in Cuban
"Eisner's exacting and evocative prose will compel readers through each stage of the poet's life.. in this new standard-bearer among Neruda biographies."
— Booklist
"Eisner brings alive Latin America's greatest poet... Empathetic but unflinching when occasion calls for criticism, Eisner weaves his subject's stanzas that resonate with the poet's personal stories. A definitive biography and instant classic."
— Library Journal
"The descriptions of places where Neruda lived and traveled are poetry themselves."
— Publishers Weekly
I'm just trying to show that the Post's review is definitely an outlier- so people aren't put off right away by it. You can look at Amazon, goodreads, IndieBound, and will see even more like the ones I just plucked. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, algorithm or whatever, Google doesn't share them here. I truly believe this book delivers a lot of good to the world, and so I hope more people will read it.
