I love English period dramas, so no matter what, I would find *something* to like about this movie. And it wasn’t bad. But I found it it hard to believe. And as history would have it, there’s absolutely no proof that it went down this way. So my skepticism wasn’t entirely misplaced. Even taking it at face value as a fictional account, some parts of this movie annoyed me. The weird clanging sound effects, for example, that were not in just one scene, but several. I think they were trying to convey some strange psychological tension, but I just found them off-putting. All-in-all, it was diverting, and I’m glad to be able to say that I saw the film that won so many awards. But for pure entertainment value, I sort of wish that I had watched *Mary Poppins Returns.*
* Also- this is not a movie for kids or younger teens
