While an upgrade in graphics and gameplay from it's predecessors, I had a much stronger sense of exploration playing "Rise of the Tomb Raider".
The world feels very "convenient", giving the game a vibe like:
- yes, we are looking for this artefact for 500 years, can you help us?
- yeah sure, found it. Was lying not 200m from you dude
- oh yeah that's where we left it
The abandoned temples are also not very believable, more often looking like something out of a futuristic transformers movie and not remnants of ancient civilizations. I know the tomb raider games always have fiction but I think this time they went a bit over the top.
And the story doesn't help much either:
- where is my mom?
- she is dead
- well that sucks, but no time for that, let's move on.
Also, when I first started playing I felt this fear of being attacked by jungle creatures. You realize pretty fast the jungle has almost no predators, making the whole immersion just disappear. There aren't even enough predators to upgrade your weapons, making hunting them a repetitive task with no tension whatsoever, since they die after 2 shots anyway.
A bit disappointed, I super loved the last game, so this one feels rushed and done without attention to detail.
