This beautiful movie is at times scary in its loneliness and exhilarating in its freedom. We are presented with a character that is surrounded by love and opportunities from not only her family, but the people she meets along the road. Yet she sabotages every relationship for the road and the grief she carries inside from the loss of her husband. There is no happy ending here, although we are constantly hoping for one throughout the movie, but then isn't that life itself. It's hard to sympathy with the main character when she constantly works against achieving a "stable" life, but somehow we do. We do because there is a little bit of Fern in all of us.

I was really wanting to like this. I mean who wouldn't like Northern Exposure but with an Alien as the lead. The comparison is valid, a small town, cold weather, guy who becomes the town doctor unwillingly, and lots of cooky characters. The problem here is the chemistry, there isn't any! The cooky characters aren't lovable (except for the deputy). Perhaps it's just poor casting or the lack of strong actors (comedy is not easy). Perhaps it's the male lead, who is also unlikable. Sure NE's doctor was a curmudgeon but at least you could connect with him. I mean They didn't have to make the alien character so stiff, aren't they a superior being? He could've learned human ways quickly. Maybe it gets better in the second episode, but for me, if you don't have me in the first, it's goodbye!
