I read the book years ago and after watching the movie which I actually found partly entertaining; I'm sure the major reason why the movie failed is that you cannot understand everybody's motivations from just watching as a 3rd person. All the characters in the book had personal issues or fears and the sphere specifically picked up on those things and used it against them. The key question that was never answered was why did 'Jerry' do this in the first place?
