Such an underrated and underappreciated gem.
Aside from the countless callbacks to various Scooby-Doo shows and countless references to Hanna-Barbera (including a great homage to pop-culture with Dick Dastardly as the villain which perfectly befits his status as Hanna-Barbera's most beloved villain), ''SCOOB!'' is a love letter to both the source material and to Hanna-Barbera, combined. While also bringing out an enhanced, character-driven narrative that feels fresh and new, yet still captures the heart of the source material and what made it work.
Never have I seen a Scooby film this beautifully animated, this meta, this fresh, this hilarious, this character-driven, and even this memorable until this movie came along. This is easily the best Scooby-Doo movie in YEARS. Not only am I looking forward to the next mystery, but also the next installment of the Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe that is off to an underrated start.
In a meta sense, the movie's use of tearjerker moments is even used in a strange way as heartwarming fanservice for people (including yours truly) who grew up with these characters. In all these years with rumors of this being a Hanna-Barbera Crisis Crossover, no one really seemed to have given it the thought to the most heartwarming thing about the studio that both in their shows and in their partnership was to build the movie around just how much they mean to each other and to the fans.
If William Hanna and Joseph Barbera (the founders of Hanna-Barbera) were still around, this feels like the kind of movie, and Scooby-Doo movie, they'd be making if they had the budget to do so.
