Why, oh why, did he write this book?
Beautifully written alright...but there IS NO STORY. Pointless. A WW2 hero returns home and suspecting his wife to have had an illicit affair with the local priest, kills him in cold blood, offers no explanation for his crime whatsover and is subsequently tried and executed for the murder. His wife has been institutionalised following an altercation with the husband, and eventually dies.
There is a small sting/twist in the tale...but it comes so late in the story that by then the reader is numbed into slumber and is beyond caring.
There of course is a lengthy & unnecessary diversion into a long section of the book centring around the Japanese invasion and occupation of Philippines and the capture and torture of American and Philipino PoWs referred to as the Bataan Death March. New territory for Mr Grisham (war writing) but wholely unnecessary to the story.
