I was disappointed in this book, so disappointed that I didn't even finish. The main character was not a role model for children or even adults. Her behavior ranges from sneaking away from her family and lying about it, to thinking up swear words that use God's name and body parts, to trying to cast spells, to continually speaking negatively of her father, and more. I was also saddened by her very casual, knowing reference of her brother and a young woman "snuggled into the hay" and how it meant her loss of virginity. All this in the first few chapters! I am further saddened by the fact that this is a Newbery Honor book, and is read in schools. Surely we can give our children better role models!
