This movie is practically perfect in every way.
To start, comparing it to the first is absolutely trite and unoriginal. A better review would be found judging a McDonalds menu.
I’ve loved Mary before I can easily remember. Not the movie at first but the character. There are photos of me holding an umbrella flying away. In childhood I really thought an umbrella could make you take flight. Of course when I heard they were making a sequel I shuddered and cringed and said “oh dear lord what’s going to happen”
I was proven so wrong. From beginning to end the movie made me smile and cry. It calls back to the original in the underscoring as the use the original music by the Sherman brothers to notate which characters we are seeing, whilst a beautiful new score rides above it. We see the birds at St. Paul’s, the penguins, even the original Jane Banks (If you caught it). But the testimony goes to Emily Blunt.
She was Mary Poppins in every way. Vain, court, cunning, bright and sweet. Everything Mary is. To compare her to Julie is a weak injust to the powerful performance Blunt gives. I hold the original so close to my heart that I surprised myself how much I loved this performance. Her nuances that harken back to the original should allow the naysayers (if they even caught them) to say “this is now Emily’s ‘Mary’”. And again, goodness sake, Julie Andrews herself gave Emily her blessing. What review is going to top that?
