A Film Barely Held Together by Contrivance and Plot Armour
Damsel has a good start with an interesting premise. But somewhere along the way loses its plot and much like it's protagonist, scrambles it's way out of a cave. I was hooked in the beginning, in which a princess was thrown into a metaphorical fire pit, where chances of survival were slim to none. You see, an evil fire breathing dragon, lived in the cave she was thrown into. Basically shes a sacrifice. So the dragon can avenge her babies deaths by killing the royal family who destroyed her eggs. Only thing is, these girls aren't from the family. A ceremony where a blood exchange happens between said Damsel and the royal family whom she's marrying into, makes the dragon believe the Damsel is from the same royalty. But how she can smell the royal blood and not the Damselsbtrue blood, is a question we shouldn't ask. Anyway, that's the main plot, which has way too many scenes of Millie Bobby Brown escaping and getting saved by plot convenience. And once she escapes, the plot makes it so MBBs sister has gone through the same shambles. So it's upto Millie to rescue her damsel in distressed sister. And she does that. At the same time she saves the dragon as well, they have a heart to heart behind the scenes and together the dragon and her vanquish the main royal family. The same dragon who for centuries killed several young princesses, blindly assuming they're from the same royal blood.
Technically speaking, the film was not bad, it had some beautiful shots, the acting was good and hair and makeup were beautiful even if not from that era. Though I should point out that the dragon's character design were very off, the scale was all over the place, the dragon went from blue whale sized to baby whale shark. And this was making it even harder to suspend disbelief.
And there was a blue whale sized dragon amount of suspension of disbelief thatnwas needed for this film.
