To fully enjoy this movie you will have to turn your brain onto airplane mode. The moment you try to involve any logic, (even within the movie's plane of existence) you're left wondering why're you even watching it. I respect the work put into the movie but, I can't give the extra brownie points most reviews are giving.
1. The messages that were shared throughout the film were pleasant ones that most people who watch it, agree with deep down. Speaking to your audience is a must so it's kinda difficult to call it groundbreaking or inspiring.
2. The concept felt like it was taken from Twilight Zone. Not to say that alone is bad, but the one reason TZ got away with some of it's themes is due to how quickly they got the story done. A lot of things are left as plot holes in "Us" (Not including the "hidden messages") that only felt that way due to making it a full length movie. If kept short and simple the movie would've been loved by both sides of the aisle.
3. The character development was way too absurd. From the beginning you get the feeling the family is quite "sheltered", but when all hell breaks loose they literally pretend as if it's their 2nd time going through the apocalypse. (Dad still makes dad jokes, kids ending lives, life or death situation but arguing over who drives, etc.)
To keep things from getting out hand, all in all it was decent movie. Very entertaining but not worth any groundbreaking extra points. Acting was great and the theme was interesting. Time will tell how well it stands it up. My money is on that it tried so hard to speak to a certain time, that it will get lost within it.
