It's a romance. I turn pages but my mind keeps trailing off to other things. This book just didn't hold my interest. The main characters spend a lot of time getting to the climax of the book, but it feels unnatural and forced. It's as if the author was trying to fit the story into a formula instead of letting the story flow and the characters behave organically.
Firstly, Finch is really pushy in his advances to Violet. This makes him an unattractive character to me. In addition, I noticed that Finch introspects a lot more and has more interesting thoughts than Violet, which makes her seem shallow and more like a plot device than a character. I feel that something is missing on her side, because the way her character behaves doesn't make sense. She rejects Finch's advances and acts revolted by him for a good part of the story, but also talks about being attracted to him when he touches her. But when she does finally think about him, she doesn't reflect beyond just thinking he is good looking. There are no thoughts of substance. Her entire personality is just being upset her sister died, writing, and being attracted and revolted by Finch. Oh, and then seeing her first naked boy (which is Finch) and then carrying on like nothing happened (???)
Not understanding what all the hype is about, it's just another run of the mill y/a romance story. I should add that it does have a unique angle on mental health.
Take my opinion with a grain of salt though, this is not a professional critique.
