This has to be one of the most overhyped films I've seen in my lifetime, a ridiculous, woeful film that was actually painful to watch, never before have I longed so much to see the end credits roll... Where to start, all the cast seemed to have different regional accents but the acting was ok by and large leaving aside Colin Farrells 80s haircut...and what's the deal here, is casting a closed shop cos its mainly the same faces I'm seeing in every major film set in Ireland, even D'unbelievables made an appearance plus that was one of the most unconvincing priests I've ever seen, Gleeson did what Gleeson does suffering for his art in every scene acting like hell... the sexes would have been segregated in the church in the twenties btw plus every damn cliche was used, the drinking paddies up and down to the pub,the constant trad sessions, the gossipy postmistress, the wise spinster sister, the animals wandering around the kitchen, the abuse, the suicide, and an old cailleach profesising woe every so often, they were all there.. then to cap it all when Farrells character was burying the horse he picked it up like it was a bag of straw (maybe it was)... This was no allegorical masterpiece that people didn't get, how could one have not Got it, seeing as we were welted over the head with allegories throughout the ordeal...anyway one thing I've learned is that it's impossible to get an honest critique on any film containing Irish characters from the Irish media with few exceptions
