One of the things that bothered me about this movies is how ambiguous the timeline seems to be. It's supposed to be set around the 1980s, yet certain things, styles and backgrounds seemed very modern and 2010-ish. Even the haircut seems pretty modern to me.
The major plotline of spy movies is pretty much the same here: main character with sad or traumatic backstory, a genius multi-talented femme fatale main character that never misses a shot, frenemies, betrayals and sex scenes (there's like 6). The plot twists are quite predictable, but still enjoyable.
Acting is a solid 9. Action choreography and performance are pretty good, although very limited to only 2 major action scenes (which is disappointing for a 2-hour long action movie).
The major thing that costs this movie 2 stars from me is how I find the protagonist's progress plausible. It doesn't really make sense how, after only 1 year of training (which perhaps includes her getting clean as an addict) that was never shown on screen, everything seems to just work out for her in such a short time? Including the time taken for her to be recruited by the French model recruiter. As a supposedly regular girl from the market with absolutely no training as a model at all, she was quickly adored the moment she stepped into the studio without screening and voila! Next day she's a Paris fashion star!
It also seems to come too easily for the protagonist in fight scenes, who often fights multiple guys 3 times her size alone and never seems to have a hard time doing it.
Everything seems to fall into place too easily too quickly for her that the audience didn't get to feel connected to this character, to see her overcome her adversities from zero and see her maybe wanting to give up while in training. To see her learn and grow, to flinch once in a while and be human and for us to cheer her on. In short, the character is too perfect from the get go. It's like watching a typical Mary Sue on action, with the two pining white romantic interests and all.
Overall, the movie is definitely a nice and entertaining watch for a Thursday night, worth giving it a chance, but don't expect anything too big from it.
