I actually really enjoyed this film. Sure, it ain’t no Oscar masterpiece but it is a fun, silly, funny film for families and sonic fans. You can tell this was made with love and not by a corporate machine. There are a lot of highlights and flaws but I still really enjoyed this movie. For one, Sonic himself was pretty funny. Ben Schwartz brings an interesting take on the character and I honestly really liked him. Sonic himself looks great and has some funny moments. He feels like a caffeinated 12 year old, fast talking and all. His relationship with Tom was also pretty enjoyable to watch too! Oh yeah, James Marsden was fine. His character is a bit generic, but he is not really bad or anything. He’s doing a good job with the material given to him. Now, the jokes. The jokes were really hit or miss. Some jokes were really funny, like some of Jim Carrey’s goofy gags. But there was a fart joke that was clearly for the young fans in the audience. Yeah, there is some jokes that don’t work but it doesn’t ruin the movie or anything. Now, Jim Carrey. Jim was fantastic in this film. It felt like a classic, goofy 90’s performance. Jim Carrey brings on an interesting take on Dr. Robotnik. I like how he evolves throughout the movie, getting more and more insane. There’s even a dance routine with him that you just can’t help but smile at. Jim Carrey was fun in this movie, if a little out of place. Everybody gives a mostly serious performance. But when Jim Carrey and another actor like James Marsden are on the screen together, it begins to feel a bit out of place. But nothing too infuriating. Although the movie has lots of positives, it’s not flawless. The pacing was a little too fast sometimes. Especially the beginning with Baby Sonic. It is really fast sometimes (fittingly) particularly during the opening scenes and the end scenes. The middle kind of dragged on, but it wasn’t boring. The pacing was kind of a mess. Also, there is a couple of product placements. Like Zillow and Olive Garden, which is mentioned twice. It feels like a commercial and really out of place, but you can quickly forget about those moments. There is also 2 scenes where sonic flosses, which was kind of cringe worthy but I got through it. Now, this next one didn’t bother me too much but I felt it was worth noting. In this film, Sonic is incredibly lonely. He lives on earth but can’t interact with any human. He also stalks people and gives them nicknames, which was kind of strange... but that’s not the point. Like I said, Sonic is really lonely. Resulting in him being really happy in some scenes and than suddenly realizing he’s alone forever and the scene getting all depressing. Those moments were really sappy and kind of came out of nowhere but I quickly get past them. Now the visuals for the most part were pretty good, but there is just 2 scenes were it just didn’t work that well. There was a scene where Tom is holding sonic in his arms and it looked kind of subpar to me. I don’t know what it was about it, but it just didn’t look that convincing. The next scene is a scene where Sonic, Tom and Maddie are falling off a building and sonic throws a ring behind them to save them and it looked really green screened. That kind of bothered me. But setting all that aside, Sonic The Hedgehog is a satisfying, charming, action packed, funny and fun movie with a couple of issues. Like I said, this movie isn’t going to go breaking records or anything, but it isn’t bad! Not at all! I recommend this movie for families and definitely sonic fans. Everyone should enjoy Jim Carrey, the action and humor.
I give Sonic The Hedgehog (2020) a 8/10
