In general, I think it's fresh, compelling, and heartfelt. Kerry Washington's acting is stellar as usual. I agree with another reviewer that Delroy Lindo's character, his acting, and the portrayed relationship between him and and his grandson's character are the best parts of the show.
The aspect of the show I liked the least is Kerry Washington's "inner child" character (while the young actress is great)- this storytelling device just doesn't work for me in the way it's overused! It's silly and over the top, and the way they have this child cursing excessively- it's cringeworthy and unnecessary. However, they DID use the inner child plot device well with Delroy's character.
Despite my one criticism, overall, I really enjoyed the show and I'm looking forward to a second season!!
