I read the book twice-
It's an excellent book - it is comprehensive, analytical and multidimensional. It is a must for those interested in race relations in the US.
This book goes beyond a narrow, simplistic and quite often biased way of studying ethnic relations in LA in particular and US in general.
The other strength of this book is that it brings in the Latino dimension to the race relations in the US, beside Koreans (Asians) and Blacks relations under the broader White dominant superstructure, it incorporates increasingly important Latinos relations. Additionally, this book cover race relations over a long period of time-for about 2 decades or more- and by doing that it is able to see changes and continuity in the dynamics of race relations.
