Dear Editor;
I have always been a big fan of reading and listening to local and national news. I, for the most part, have noticed little bias or individual opinion in that news.
However, I was taken back when I saw a CBS EVENING NEWS broadcast on Thursday, December 5, 2019, when in Nora O’Donnell’s ending remarks in the closing story of Rosa Park’s accomplishments as a civil rights activist included the statement “..one woman can make a difference”.
I, in no way, want to simplify or diminish Rosa Parks’ accomplishments, but I noticed how one word in a statement can define in such simple terms one of the most major, unknowingly mistakes we make when discussing the accomplishments of Americans. We tend to divide the country by race, ethnicity, sex, religion, political views and so many more factors.
I am sure Ms. O’Donnell unconsciously made the distinction in the word “woman” when she should have used the word “person”, to include all persons who challenge themselves and others to do what is right. All Americans must act, work, and think on not dividing our country, but, to bring us together as a nation, where we all share the accomplishments of its individuals.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jim Carico
