I was looking forward to someone catching the real heart of Judy Garland. This film made no attempt at understanding her as a child, a mother, a performer or the world's greatest song interpreter. I don't blame the cast; even though many were mis-cast. Sorry, not many ALL.
I blame the writer, the director and the producers for missing an incredible opportunity to show the complexity of stardom from an early age and how it affects some people.
I agree with an earlier post that only showing someone's lows without their highs, is a pointless story. It makes no sense in that there was a life lived. It makes even less sense to only cover 2 weeks in that life with no conflict and no resolution (one way or the other). Judy Garland died six months later???? Why? We sat through 2 grueling (pretty boring) hours of droning negativity with pauses in dialogue that seemed pointless just to READ about the end?
If this was a woman struggling with demons which had affected her relationship with her children, we would have seen some more happy moments so we would believe there ever was a relationship. Everything in this movie was disconnected emotionally. No peaks and valleys...just valleys.
Rene Zellweger is a superb actress. She was not given great tools to work with. The only way this horrible script and production could possibly had been worth the $12 it cost me to sit through it, would have been to be able to hear Judy's actual voice and Rene doing a great lip synch. She had many of the mannerisms but she was handicapped by poor execution by the director and the production team.
I liken this to a future film where Kevin Hart is cast to play the life story of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Even the best acting job would be a miss.
