*SPOILERS*
8/10
i really enjoyed this movie. i just saw it two hours ago and am still thinking about it! the best thing i did for myself is go in with low expectations and no knowledge of this film except for the trailers. the person i went with apparently saw a review that said the movie was the best film of the decade and was very disappointed. i however am still debating if this is one of my favorite films of the year but…it was not perfect. i am trying to forget the last 1/4 of the film bc that is what ruined the 10/10 rating i thought i was going to give it.
the cinematography was amazing. hands down visually and aesthetically pleasing to look at with so many tricks done to make it captivating on screen. the audio was also riveting and kept up with the suspense of the film.
the acting, imo, was phenomenal. i loved the awkwardness and the nervousness of the protagonist, it made her experience feel real to me. some people think she should have been more stoic, i disagree and felt that she was relatable. especially because she obviously knew things deep down that were “hidden” from her. it’s like part of her knows something but can’t unlock those answers for whatever reason. nicholas cage though!!! i thought his performance was superb. you can’t at all tell it’s nicholas cage and that to me sells it. his performance was extremely unsettling and weird, you can tell that his character is capable of craziness. the mom was very creepy and also played that well. i thought all the actors played their characters right! no complaints on the acting front.
i was at the edge of my seat the whole time and did enjoy the jump scares, i don’t think they were cheaply done but sort of gave insight into how chilling some crimes can be to the point where they scare those who are working on them.
now this is where things take a turn… i am not a fan of the “devil is real and made me do it” trope. that killed it for me because it’s too out of this world for me to be able to imagine it and believe. it took a supernatural turn that was not wanted. i wished that they had stuck with the serial killer theme and kept it as a horror about a serial killer and a woman who did what she needed to do to protect her daughter not as a horror about satan who infects and influences. also the dolls… i didn’t really understand that. the last twenty minutes could be completely be edited out, it just skewed the whole film in another direction.
i will be watching this again but not all the way to the end.
