This is an important addition to the library of books looking at the history of dogs and dog's involvement with mankind. The author references a great number of useful historic sources along the way. He looks at the many different functions that dogs have fulfilled alongside man, and explores them in detail. It is a book that could easily have been published as 4 or 5 books, so the reader will not digest it in a sitting or two! He is, however, also a good writer, so the material is not dry, but good reading.

An important addition to the current spate of publications on the evolution and domestication of dogs, Kolner-Matznick takes the latest science, and some of her own work, and finds a theory that moves beyond Coppinger and his detractors. At this time, after the Tamyr wolf, and the newer Siberian permafrost puppy, Her thoughts fit the evidence best of what I've read.
