This movie disappointed me immensely, as I was very excited to watch a film directed by a talented actress, however, I believe Maggie Gyllenhaal should stick to acting.
The shots in this film were simply loathing, shiftless, lazy, and in no way influenced the film in a captivating way, and if this is the future of cinema then we should all begin panicking as soon as possible. Additionally, this film made me feel as if I was watching a film created by a ninth grade high school student, newly introduced to filmmaking.
The basis of the plot simply leads to the conclusion present in the film all along that Olivia Colman's character, Leda, is a poor mother with no real desire for motherhood. I believe such a story could have been presented in a much more entrancing way, instead of pointless banter which ultimately lead to what was told to us in the very beginning. Two thirds of the characters were also utterly useless and in no way enhanced the plot.
However, Olivia Colman's performance, despite the inferior plot, was very striking and great, and she possessed the ability to immerse herself deeply, and emotionally into this character. Due to her performance, I gave this movie 1 stars. Dakota Johnson's performance, however, significantly let me down. She doesn't exhibit the power to convince the audience of her characters importance and lacks many of the needed skills to become a great actress, such as Olivia Colman.
To conclude, this film is a travesty, possessing the scent of desperation of wanting to be far greater than it truly is. This film is neither enticing or astounding as critics have claimed, and should be disregarded greatly. Maggie Gyllenhaal please stick to the acting.
