Think of Season 1 of Discovery like Season 1 of TNG. Huge teething issues- the cast and crew were obviously still finding their feet and the result was an at times good show that could quickly turn into a mess.
Season 2 really made an effort to change that and it shows. They fixed the Klingons (though I think we should all just agree not to mess with their lore again) and made it much more on a real ensemble cast. It still focuses a lot on Micheal but has a lot more time dedicated to other characters. Suru was amazing this season! Tilly was awesome! Captain Pike was fun and interesting (I've wanted to see more of him since I first watched TOS.)
Don't believe people who say the show is an "overly politically correct blah SJW blah blah blah" show. It's still not perfect, but they are clearly trying to make a show both new and old fans can enjoy. I find it interesting how many negative reviews clearly haven't actually watched any of Season 2.
