Let me start by saying that there are a few things I disagree with in this movie. But the reason I would give it a five star rating is just one big thumping one- the makers of the movie tried to make something different from the usual bile you see in Bollywood. Amidst all the beefed up macho men and the item numbers, Meenakshi Sundareshwar emerges like a breath of fresh air. It's a nuanced film with a lot of subtle acting and sensitive characters. It is traditional in its setting, yes, but the characters emerge from them, standing up for what they believe in. If you are tired of the North Indian Bollywood fetish, then Meenakshi Sundareshwar gives you South India in all its beauty, it's customs and it's character.
Sanya Malhotra's character is an absolute gem. Portraying her uniqueness, away from the stereotypical leads of Bollywood, she comes out victorious in her portrayal of a girl who gets into an arranged marriage of her own will, and decides to work with what she has. My favourite scenes are the one where shows her love as a Rajnikanth fan. One critical comments-Sundareshwar's character was a little too shy for me, and there are places where I felt Meenakshi carries him. But that's all. Watch it just for watching something different and real and beautiful and subtle.
