The music is superb and sets the right tone.
I was impressed with the casting and acting, but not with the writing. Although changes are needed for screen adaptations, I do not think it is necessary to introduce entirely new elements and fundamentally change the key characters. Perrin is a gentle person afraid of hurting people due to his size. His relationship with the wolves is his most important attribute and this was sadly underdeveloped in the adaptation. Matt is a scamp in the books and his character is an important balance to the more serious Rand and Perrin. If you do not know that, it is difficult to understand the impact of the tainted dagger. They all come from positive families. Thom Merrillan, Min, and Loial are essential characters who are also underdeveloped in the adaptation. The series is reasonably faithful to the portrayal of Moraine, Lan, Egweyne, and Nynaeve.
Personally, even though it is dated, I wish the show had retained the distinctions between the strengths of men and women in the books. Implying that the Dragon Reborn could be female was unnecessary. The books are full of strong women.
