The Jesus Puzzle is the "bible" of Jesus Mythicism. Doherty is a serious scholar of Greek and Roman antiquity, of early Christianity and of the Jewish and Hellenistic beliefs that formed the core of "cosmic Jesus" of Pauline theology - the 1st century apocalyptic discourse that led to modern Christianity, i.e., the uncorroborated, un-evidenced belief in a historical Jesus that emerged in the 2nd and 3rd centuries.
Unlike Jesus skeptics who stretch credulity with farfetched, unproven conspiracy theories, Doherty doesn't invent his own narratives or fabricate strained parallels between Christianity and the religions of antiquity. Primarily using Hebrew sources, he elucidates the progression from apocalyptic Judaism to Paul's heavenly savior and thence to the notional miracle worker and sage said to be born of a virgin and crucified by Pontius Pilate.
A must-read first-read for anyone concerned about the origins of Christianity.
