I had to come to the reviews to see if the title character was a little mentally challenged. It made me mad at every turn because I was wondering was she slow (no disrespect) because it was almost as if she didn’t understand social ques. She was a street worker but had no street smarts. Very polite and maybe that’s how she made it successfully in street life but it was unrealistic to me. Also I don’t know who to blame maybe the director or the screenwriter because how did Katie end up in this position? Spoiler alert!!!! Also when she was raped by two members of the town she couldn’t even articulate it to her boyfriend as if she didn’t know that what she had experienced was rape. The movie is unrealistic because at a certain point survival instinct has to kick in as a human. self preservation is the first law of nature, and Katie had absolutely none of it. Which is also hard to believe because she was the sole provider for her family. It’s hard not to blame Katie because by all means she is very much the victim but then again at every turn she chooses to make the mistakes that land her in her predicament. For example the first time mr. Daniels doesn’t pay her the full amount for the sex work (by the way she asked for $11 for sex m..girl what!?) he pays her $9. Katie should have took the L but never gotten into a car with him again! But because we are to believe that she is an optimist she does and he rapes her and then kicks her out. Also with her mom the drunk who she constantly gives money to so she can pay the rent, & every single time she takes it to buy booze. Katie has been saving money to go to San Fransico when the landlord comes into the trailer demanding his money Katie goes into her stash right in front of the mother and shows her all the money she was saving then proceeds to put it back & head to work I just couldn’t believe it. Also the ex friend who was stealing from the job and blames it on Katie. The boss maybelle who was Katie’s only friend even gave Katie an out and said she didn’t believe her Katie still took the blame & quit. You are not required to set yourself on fire for others to stay warm. (Is what I wanted to shout) This movie could’ve been good if it was more realistic choosing to see the good in people is one thing but blatantly ignoring the bad is another. Being optimistic is amazing we need more people like that in life but Katie’s child like innocent naïveté was so unbelievable because of what we the viewers already know what the character is going threw in life and could only imagine what she has had to overcome just to get there. By a lot of standards life should’ve made Katie at least more guarded if not mean as hell.
