I loved the book. It tells the story of a 14 year old child living in Nigeria with her brother and father - her mother has recently & tragically died. The tale that follows shows the breadth of a country that has tribes and pockets of society where city life and law & order do not, nor cannot reach. And so the illegal marriage of the main protagonist in the tale is Adunni, the child who suffers repeated rape by the husband: an acceptable practice for families to be able to survive - on the payments of the husband for their child bride.
Adunni does manage to find another life but again, sold as a slave to a Madam who abused her physically as well as emotionally. It does have a happy ending! With the aim of Adunni (& her dead mother’s wishes and goals for her daughter) to go to school, get an education and find her own Louding Voice. Friendship knits this tale together for the reader to see glimmers of hope in the darkness.
I had the privilege of being read to by the skilled and wonderful Adjoa Andoh. Ms. Andou brings the characters to life in a powerful and striking way. One of the best narrators I have enjoyed in a long time.
