The show was outstanding for the first 6 seasons but in season 7 and most of season 8, most the episodes were devoted to character development that did not matter, and those seasons had a very overall snail like pace to them. Most people associate Negan with being the issue of the show in these seasons, but that is absolutly not true. Seasons 9 and 10 have had some of the best moments of the entire series even without some of the main cast (though the main characters was getting crowded anyway). Cannot wait for season 11 'the finale' and the return of Rick Grimes. Would definitely binge watch even if you are not into zombie stuff and just keep watching through season 7 and 8, it will be worth it.
