The novel is often acclaimed to be a great book of the last century but I have found it to be too sleazy and veering off the beaten track as it goes on. This has been reflected in countless novels in literary history since, but of course this is likely Heller's intention as the book develops for the sake of comedy, but I find it to be a counterproductive exercise and it spirals away as the end nears. Unfortunately I find it to be a comparable novel to Animal Farm which we are all supposed to approve of, for it's slaughtering of the Communist system, but I'm always on the side of trade unionism and this is one reason I find it to be a backfiring piece of satire which though opposes war, is another one to add to the pile of satirical works that preach something as if factually correct and cannot be opposed.
